Tortoise - Beacons Of Ancestorship [thrilljockey, 2009]

TORTOISE RELEASE BEACONS OF ANCESTORSHIP JUNE 23RD ON THRILL JOCKEY. FIRST FULL-LENGTH OF NEW MATERIAL IN FIVE YEARS.
The great majority of artists spend their formative years, if not their entire careers, working to shake off the gravitational pull of their predecessors, and the many masters and masterpieces that came before them. Rare indeed is the artist who outgrows their early influences, and instead become one of the markers by which other groups are measured. Almost alone among bands of the last two decades, Tortoise is a group that resists easy metaphors and analogies, who can be described as sounding like only themselves and no one else. Twenty years after its founding, the band’s signature and singularly inimitable sound-a fluid intersection of dub, dance, jazz, techno, rock, and classical minimalism, with no part overwhelming or dominating the whole-remains an American and international original. Even more unusually, they seem to have arrived at their sound with almost no apprenticeship to speak of; to judge from their early singles and albums alone, they seem to have come into being with their musical identity and DNA fully formed, like Athena from the forehead of Zeus. Further, while the group has spawned countless imitators, heirs, and followers-sincere, flattering, and otherwise-Tortoise remains unique in the world of contemporary music for their boundless intellectual curiosity, their unmistakable compositional voice, and their synthesis of seemingly contradictory sound worlds far from their doorstep.
Beacons of Ancestorship is Tortoise’s sixth full-length album, and their first release of new material in five years, since 2004’s It’s All Around You. In the interim, the group also released and toured behind the 2006 career retrospective box set A Lazarus Taxon, and an album of covers with vocalist Will Oldham by the likes of Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, Richard Thompson, and The Minutemen, entitled The Brave and the Bold. Additionally, the individual members have kept busy with various other projects, including but not limited to Exploding Star Orchestra, Bumps, Fflashlights, and Powerhouse Sound.
A characteristic Tortoise album is one that traverses an encyclopedia of styles and reference points, a document of where musical intersections and dialogue are occurring at a given moment in time. Beacons of Ancestorship is no different, with nods to techno, punk, electro, lo-fi noise, cut-up beats, heavily processed synths, and mournful, elegiac dirges. We see these ideas working out in compositions like “High Class Slim Came Floatin’ In,” an eight-minute track which playfully references the world of ecstatic rave and dance culture with a curiously ambivalent, multi-part suite overlaid with robotic, machine-sounding melodies that stop and start in several different time signatures before the song’s ultimate resolution; and again in “Yinxianghechengqi,” which begins as a straightforward uptempo math-rocker before steadily accelerating into a wall of fuzzy atonal sqwonk.
There are many moods, styles, and modes in the Tortoise songbook, of course-often, in the course of a single composition. Consistent throughout, however, is what might be called a pervasive element of group play, or ensemble-mindedness, as opposed to emphasis on a virtuoso soloist or frontman. (Think Robert Altman versus Robert Plant.) In the same sense that the string quartet and all small-ensemble chamber music can be thought of as an intelligent conversation among equals-violins, viola, and cello taking turns, expressing opinions, joining voices and then coming apart, as also occurs in elevated discourse-so, too, the calling card of a Tortoise song is the experience of a sound being worked out as a conversation among the individual and interrelated parts-of an ensemble thinking collectively and in group dynamics through the expression of a multi-layered musical thought.
Tortoise’s Beacons of Ancestorship is out June 23rd on Thrill Jockey. Additionally, the first track on the album will be included on a Thrill Jockey compilation, Records Toreism, being released on Record Store Day on April 18th, and the band will be releasing a series of 5″ records following the album’s release. Tortoise will also be playing the Pitchfork Music Festival on Friday, July 17th. Their performance is part of the “Write the Night: Set Lists By Request” series where ticket holders can vote on which of the band’s songs they’d like to hear during their set.

Proem - Till There’s No Breath [2009]

Proem delivers his 8th album and first for the newly awakened Nonreponse imprint. This time out Richard Bailey revisits themes that made his “darker still” ep one of Enpeg Digital’s most popular releases. “Till there’s no breath” is somewhere between dream and nightmare and is clearly an album where Bailey takes an honest and emotionally unsettling stab at his take on dark ambient. Somewhere between the undefined washes of Lustmord and the ebb and flow of Eno “Till there’s no breath” is a much welcomed addition to Proem’s body of work.

Resolving the differences between competing impulses
Classically schooled in both concert piano and UK rave, Jon Hopkins finds crossing points for the incongruent sources he looks to for inspiration. His resume includes work with Brian Eno and Coldplay, but for his third solo LP, Hopkins turned his attention to things far from the mainstream and created a complex sequence that starts with a rustic string chorus, moves through a mire of brutal dubstep and overwhelming bass and concludes in placid drifts of tiered melodies. Scatterings of found sound invade the margins where one song links to the next and Hopkins makes Insides play out as a single, intricately mapped thought. Everything makes more sense listened to in sequence, but that’s not to say there aren’t standout moments. The title track is rewind-worthy dubstep devastation, while “Colour Eye” is no less destructive while playing up the genre’s techno connections and signaling the end to the disc’s heavy-handed first movement. The disc’s 9-minute centerpiece “Light Through the Veins” patiently lets its shimmery melody build and fade along a natural path to signal the arrival of a rewarding new tone that sounds especially bright after the rugged start to the set. Hopkins does wonders matching formal training with underground experience.

The Dead Sea - The Dead Sea

Sydney three-piece The Dead Sea is composed of vocalist, guitarist and video artist Tim Bruniges, bassist David Trumpmanis, and drummer Nick Kennedy - the latter two musicians involved with other Sydney-based projects such as Big Heavy Stuff, Bluebottle Kiss, The Cops and Sarah Blasko. While I will apologise for the preceding emboldened list of deceivingly namedropped artists that may have stuck out as you skimmed this paragraph, it is interesting and worth considering how such an indie-centric endowment of musical capacity could result in this project, The Dead Sea, that could not be further removed stylistically from any of the aforementioned artists.

The Dead Sea’s motivation seems to stem from the same place as latter-day Mogwai, who after years of defining the parameters of the (now tattered) post-rock genre, have decided, like Tarantino and Natural Born Killers, to disown its bastardised and debased remnants for greener, boundless experimental pastures. The difference here is that The Dead Sea have skipped the formalities of confining style establishment and gone straight to their calling, which is to veer a little to the left of post-rock’s beckoning. Listening to the opener, “Slow Jet”, gives off this impression - the grumbling howls of synth and tribal drumming are key symptoms of a band shaking off the post-rock infection.

The thick, Hammock-like howling atmospherics of the first EP suggested that their full-length would be anything but what they’ve concocted on their debut. It is by no means an epic recording, running on ten tracks that clock in at a conservative 40 minutes. It doesn’t constantly erupt in climax-oriented sonic enormity, instead opting to leave the reverb to a relatively sparing presence. Even the style, composition and technical execution of the album, when isolated, in no way signal groundbreaking, novel gestures by any stretch of the imagination. Instead, the album draws its fortitude from the forward momentum of its piece-to-piece fluidity. The Dead Sea have mastered the ability to identify, fuse and arrange their far-reaching breadth in a way that allows each number to say its piece concisely without ever overstaying its welcome. The efficiency under which The Dead Sea dictate and convert their alternating styles, that would otherwise so easily be the cause for disconcerting and disruptive listen, instead becomes the agent of a wondrous aural treat.

Of the ten tracks, I would say only four are solid, determined, structurally integral pieces, with the rest floating around the two-minute mark serving as ambient filler. That is not to suggest that these tracks are superfluous, quite the opposite; these interludes give the record the wiggle room it needs to segue seamlessly, and they do this without ever hampering or undermining their own aesthetic sensations or the aesthetic sensibility of the album's entirety. It never devours precious minutes with extended introductions, self-indulgent brackets of feedback or repetitive phrases, and it's this efficiency that makes the experience compelling. The bigger pieces do well to accommodate themselves and their ranging styles, from the hypnotic indie rock of “The Devil Bends”, to the dangerously close flirtation with dynamic post-rock on “Zabriskie Points”, to the the closing cinematic ambience of “Bandicoots”. On top of this, “Departure Gates”, a piece that certainly made an impression on the reviewer of the EP, Lee Whitefield, who said “its infectious little tune burrows its way into my subconscious in a way which very few artists of this ilk are able to do so”, (a sentiment I will happily steal) finds a slightly polished version of itself a home on the LP.

The Dead Sea have certainly had their share of attention since 2007. On their myspace, they’ve humbly publicised the fact that “Respire”, from the old EP, was used in an episode of CSI: Miami. Now, if it doesn’t already go without saying that any association with a badass like David Caruso ought to help their credibility skyrocket, then perhaps this unveiling of a thoroughly seductive, tightly packaged self-titled LP, that exceeded all expectations after the scope offered on the stylistic snippets of the EP, should convince you that The Dead Sea are not an outfit going away any time soon.

Sylvain Chauveau - The Black Book Of Capitalism

Sylvain Chauveau is one of those artists we hear mentioned a great deal, yet he has proven strangely elusive when it comes to tracking down his work. Best known (and easiest to get hold of) is his seminal Fat Cat album 'Un Autre Decembre' which set him up as one of the world's premier exponents of the electronic/classical sound, but Sylvain had already been releasing records long before that album hit the shelves. 'The Black Book of Capitalism' originally appeared in 2000 on the French DSA imprint and sadly never hit UK shores, but Type (Sylvain's new base of operations) have managed to put together a gloriously remastered and repackaged version for the wider world to hear at last. Those of you who have been enamoured with the artist's stark, minimal sound might be shocked at first to hear the variety on offer; 'The Black Book of Capitalism' is far from a mere classical record, and shows a breadth of sound never again seen
in Sylvain's catalogue to date. From the mournful, delicate piano-work of 'Et Peu a Peu les Flots...' we musical expertise, with the doomy almost Bohren-esque jazz of 'Hurlements en Favour de Serge T.' and through a chiming fairytale with 'Derniere Etape avant le Silence'.

There are almost traces of Angelo Badalamenti's work lost in the grooves here, with the
gauzy world of European cinema seeping from every crack and punctuating Sylvain's compositions with both confidence and a deft humour. It might be over eight years old now but nothing of the album has been lost with time, it has matured with age, showing new depths and character with every year that has gone by. With 'The Black Book of Capitalism' Sylvain delivered his most widescreen work so far and it's an absolute pleasure to be able to hear it again in all its glory.

Dntel - Early Works for Me If It Works for You II

Before the Postal Service grew from a charming side project into an omnipresent harbinger of indie-rock's growing commercial profile, there was a kid playing bass for a band called Strictly Ballroom while recording techno in his dorm room under the name Dntel. Jimmy Tamborello's solo electronic project wouldn't make much noise until his third record, Life Is Full of Possibilities, released in 2001 when hiring indie singers to vocalize over electronic compositions was a novel idea. Still, it wasn't just the vocal tracks that held Tamborello's breakthrough album together. Early Works For Me If It Works For You II compiles his first two albums on the Phthalo label with some heretofore unreleased material from around the time of his third. Much of the setstands in the long shadow cast by Warp Records' 90s roster, and Tamborello isn't shy about admitting that. But it also contains early experiments with the chilly but affecting instrumentals that filled in the cracks between Tamborello's more infamous collaborations, and it holds up better than you might think.

The material goes all the way back to 1994 and up through the early 00s, covering a fertile time for amateur electronic composers. Recorded in 1994, but released by Phthalo in 2001, Something Always Goes Wrong finds Tamborello just beginnging to flex his limbs. The distorted, non-repeating drum work throughout showed a love for Aphex Twin and u-ziq, but is never quite as intricate or sophisticated as either of those producer's work. "In Which Our Hero Finds a Faithful Sidekick" rides its breakbeats and yawning bass towards a vague and familiar spy-movie feeling, and while the 8-bit-sounding effects are a lot more conspicuous here than on Dntel's later records, the stretch from "In Which Our Hero Is Put Under a Spell" to "...Frees the Damsel in Distress" develops the slow and swooning vibe Tamborello explored much more fully in the near future. In contrast to his heroes, Tamborello's style was more cautious and uncluttered, making the most from his nascent ability.

While Something was Dntel's earliest material, Early Works For Me If It Works For You was his first release. From the first track on, Early Works... displayed bolder, faster, and more intricate drum patterns. Tamborello was getting better at emulating his influences, but something else was happening, too-- he often dips his toes into textures he'd later grow more comfortable with, like a hurdy-gurdy-like tone that sounds more like live instrumentation and a brief vocal sample on "Fort Instructions". You can also hear much of the melancholy keys and surging, almost soothing white noise that made his breakthrough, Life Is Full of Possibilities, so distinct. "Casuals" blends all these elements together equally: A vocal sample is even almost audible over an insistent, repetitious drum pattern and a melancholy melody, but all of it is washed-out and obscured by crackling distortion. It felt a little more slippery in terms of genre, but it also tapped a desolate, yet romantic emotional core.

A Journey Down The Well - Sorry Monsters I Have To Grow

A Journey Down The Well are known for their unique style, using classical instruments to create a special sound which flirts with rock, ambient and experimentalism.

“Sorry Monsters, I Have To Grow” is their second station on their journey; the strings create a smoky and haunting downtempo ambience with the piano; lyrical songs wink poetry.

The band was also backed by the members of Strandvägen Choir in the recording process. “Working with a choir has made a powerful impact, I can’t imagine ‘Sugarman’ and ‘Sorry Monster, I Have To Grow’ without their parts” remarks cellist Martin Bjelfvenstam.

According to the band members the album is about brutal wars, oppression of personality and trying to grow as a human being while leaving all the unnecessary fears behind. “Despite the bombs, despite the guns, despite people building prisons for themselves and others.” Taner Torun adds.

According to Anna Erneman, their contemporary classical influences move one step ahead in this album. “We are inspired by many elements. The chilly sound of post-punk, eye openers like A Silver Mt. 36 - Hypersona

"Hypersona" is the debut release by 36 for his fledgling label, 3six Recordings. Produced over a span of 3 years, it represents the first in a series of three planned albums under the 36 alias.

Unfathomably rich textures combine with delicate instrumentation, and the ghostprint of lost transmissions struggle for their right to be heard. The cold warmth of radio static rushes the heart, whilst the tender melodies break it into a thousand pieces. Always beautiful, but with an unnerving sense of malice, "Hypersona" is like a twisted fairytale, where the outcome is never certain and light must always cast a shadow.

Drawing upon countless influences, but expressed in a personal, honest voice, "Hypersona" is a distinctive, original work, which ignores trends and sits comfortably in a space without time and place.

Nicholas Thorburn, a.k.a. Nick Diamonds, has a curious preoccupation with nature. His experiences fronting indie-pop outfits Islands and The Unicorns are tinged with references to whales, rivers, and the sea. It then comes as no surprise that the prolific singer-songwriter’s debut effort with his newest project Reefer is heavily influenced by the Hawaiian landscape that spawned its creation. Recorded on the shores of Maui with hip-hop producer Daddy Kev, the duo incorporates the island’s gentle seaside rhythms to create a luscious soundscape composed of sonic waves and sun-drenched harmonies. The band’s debut self-titled work – originally given the cutesy name The Life Narcotic – takes its listener on a peaceful trek through weed-soaked Hawaiian beaches to the tune of euphoric strings and trippy beats.

Composed of six full-length tracks, three interludes, and remixes by Dntel and Flying Locus, Reefer delves into a variety of genres without losing its quintessential laid-back flavor. While composed sea-side, the collection’s surfy hits are toned-down with a subtle darkness characteristic of Thorburn’s other projects. One example is “Blue Moon,” a reworking of the classic ’30s ballad. While the track is a distinctive remake, it incorporates subdued beats, reminiscent of a day spent beach-side drinking coconut juice, overpowered by Thorburn’s ominous and foreboding vocals. This juxtaposition adds a delightful touch to the over-done classic, making it both blissful and slightly spooky.

One of the record’s better cuts is “May Baleen,” a loop-filled track touched with a slight reggae feel. Opening with a sample of an incoming tide, it encompasses all the bliss to be had drinking — and perhaps engaging in other narcotics — on a beach far away from home. “Let It Go” is a more composed ballad, though still tinged with the tranquil seaside loops that permeate throughout the rest of the record. All of the album’s tracks — interludes and remixes included — are composed of this serene feel, which begs the questions of whether or not Reefer is able to push itself beyond this one technique. As a whole, Reefer has proven its capacity for producing sunshine hits, but only time will tell if it will be able to push itself past the spaced-out beaches of Maui and towards more diverse soundscapes.

SubtractiveLAD - Where The Land Meets The Sky

Producing five albums of high quality in only five years is a monumental task. Yet, this is precisely what Stephen Hummel, who records as SubtractiveLAD, has done and with seeming ease. With "Where The Land Meets The Sky", Hummel's fifth full-length for n5MD, the SubtractiveLAD sound has been perfected to such effect that it allows Hummel to concentrate on conveying his deepest feelings rather than the processes that go into music making. The album serves as an extension of Hummel's previous album "Apparatus" (2008) and effortlessly flows between such genres as shoegaze, armchair electronica, post-rock, and classic ambient. Stylistically it seems far away from his debut "Giving Up The Ghost" and in theory it is. Yet, Hummel has lead us on a journey that for the patient has yielded great rewards. The first 1000 copies of "Where The Land Meets The Sky" comes with a bonus disc of over 45 minutes of subtractiveLAD style classically influenced ambient.

Beyond Bollywood

The title here might suggest a compilation album that is taking you past the standard Bollywood soundtrack music, but it is actually misleading: it simply sweeps up another very common style, that of "the contemporary sound of India-electronica and lounge".
Exotic chill out in other words. So far so familiar. But what sets this apart a little from many other such collections are the big name players here: Talvin Singh, Nitin Sawhney, Badmarsh and Shri, Bombay Dub Orchestra, Karsh Kale . . . Yes, most of these are also familiar on other such collections but in this nicely paced context and sometimes in remixes this all fits together with a freshness and grand sweep that is very appealing. Many Elsewhere listeners will have been down this path before, but if you haven't -- or it has been some time - then this one warrants attention. Very much in the exotic grooves, the electronic washes and orchestration, and of course the gently driving tabla, keening vocals . . .
Nice one all round. And once you are done here you might like to kick up a gear with Bollywood Dreams: Bhangra or make the big leap into the hardcore, hip-hop shouty street sound of Urban Asian which will surely wake you up.
