SubtractiveLAD - Where The Land Meets The Sky

Producing five albums of high quality in only five years is a monumental task. Yet, this is precisely what Stephen Hummel, who records as SubtractiveLAD, has done and with seeming ease. DKMA presents Andrastea - The Ascent

Growing up in Roxbury Massachusetts, in a single parent household, Dana Kelley's musical influence started with his mother. Ophelia played numerous R&B hits that are considered classics by today's house folk. Ophelia enrolled her children into the Elma Lewis School of Performing Arts, where he excelled as a classical violinist. Music is not the only passion, art as a whole was exposed to Dana Kelley aka DKMA. At the age of 16, Dana demonstrated a flair for fashion illustration, and won a 2 year scholarship to the Museum School of Fine Arts. In 1994, Dana approached DJ Bruno at Boston Beat with a cheesy demo of tracks he was working on. Bruno called Dana and told him to stop sitting on the music, and recommended house labels to send a demo to. Kult, Strictly Rhythm and Eightball received demos, and 3 days later Gladys Pizzarro called with an offer Dana could not refuse. "Krimp" was born. This was the beginning of something truly special. Dana played also a part in the UK revolution called Speed Garage. A bassline from "In the Spirit" was sampled numerous times and was released on Strictly Rhythm as "Praxis featuring Kathy Brown - Turn Me Out". Beside a lot of releases on labels like Strictly Rhythm, Contrast Records, 4th Floor Recordings, Chug Recordings and Subliminal Records he also released on Plastic City under the name "DKMA presents Andrastea". With the artists Melonie Daniels (vocals on “Meneuette At Your Side”), Melissa Bailey (vocals on “LOL”), Soul Child (vocals on “Swinging Trees”), Stacey Jethroe (vocals on “Seek ‘N’ Find), Diva Dish (vocals on “Groove”), Jeff Ramsey (vocals on “Walking On By”) and Marko Militanoon on Electric Guitar (featured artist on “Memorial Drive”) Dana Kelley created a true masterpiece. The sound of the tracks ranges between classical house rhythms and arrangements over breathless clear minimalism and chunky tech-house to very soulful downbeat and ambient titles, always with this rooted and honest sound - a very designed elctronic music world.

Terry Lee Brown Junior - Selected Remixes

Last year Terry Lee Brown Junior aka Norman Feller convinced the dancefloors and the music press with his 5th studio album “Softpack” and the singles “Chatterbox”, “Pulsar”, “Wait” (featuring Robert Manos), “Softpack – The Edit” and "Delightful Encounter". As a young boy he started playing drums, and then continued with piano lessons. In the mid 90s he discovered a new type of music that would change his life forever. The music he heard was calld deephouse, and struck Jonathans heart immediately. He now started to produce music in a more serious matter and in 1997 he got in touch with Johan Bacto, which later formed the
label PlackTown Sounds. Jonathan was now known as Ronin, and made alot of releases on the PlackTown
Sounds imprint. With alot of great feedback from radiostations, magazines, DJs and even television, Ronin continued on the path of sensual, moody deep-house. His music was reaching out to the world, and in the year of 2001 he released a mini LP on Chris Grays label, Deep4Life in Chicago. Chris gave Jonathan his second artist name J. Axel, and he was now focusing on vocal deep-house, and he started working with the
talanted vocalist Astrid Suryanto. He still produced instrumental deephouse as Ronin, and in 2002 he made a release on The Timewriter and Terry Lee Brown Juniors label Driftwood. In late 2004 Jonathan completed his album, “J. Axel - Deepness Is Served”, which was released 31st of July 2006 on the German recordlabel Boheme. Later, this album was re-released by Plastic City. Since today, Jonathan has released on various labels, contributed with music to many compilations, as well as DJing in alot of clubs over the years.
His releases and DJ-sets have always been criticaly acclaimd, and its a fact that he will keep on delivering music with precence and luxury, which touches mind, body and soul. Now you can find Ronins selected works on two releases “PlackTown Sounds Vol.1″ (released: december 2008) and “PlackTown Sounds Vol.2″ (released: march 2009) on Plastic City.

Beyond Bollywood

The title here might suggest a compilation album that is taking you past the standard Bollywood soundtrack music, but it is actually misleading: it simply sweeps up another very common style, that of "the contemporary sound of India-electronica and lounge".
Exotic chill out in other words. So far so familiar. But what sets this apart a little from many other such collections are the big name players here: Talvin Singh, Nitin Sawhney, Badmarsh and Shri, Bombay Dub Orchestra, Karsh Kale . . . Yes, most of these are also familiar on other such collections but in this nicely paced context and sometimes in remixes this all fits together with a freshness and grand sweep that is very appealing. Many Elsewhere listeners will have been down this path before, but if you haven't -- or it has been some time - then this one warrants attention. Very much in the exotic grooves, the electronic washes and orchestration, and of course the gently driving tabla, keening vocals . . .
Nice one all round. And once you are done here you might like to kick up a gear with Bollywood Dreams: Bhangra or make the big leap into the hardcore, hip-hop shouty street sound of Urban Asian which will surely wake you up.

15x15: A Celebration of 15 Years of the Big Chill

Who would have thought 15 years ago, a group of people, dedicated to bringing eclectic live music, an array of artists and like-minded people together would have come so far? From 700 people gathering in the Black Mountains in 1994 to 30,000 people gathering among the fields of Eastnor Castle Deer Park in 2008, The Big Chill Festival has always been about getting motivated by good music, animated about the arts and passionate about putting on a party.

So how to celebrate such a milestone? Well you get together all the tastemaking DJs, influential artists and the visual visionaries who make the Big Chill experience what it is, and you get them to pick one tune that sums up what the Big Chill festival means to them. Then you put all those tunes of one album and sell it for charity. So were doing that.

15 By 15 is a compilation album with, as the name suggests, 15 luminaries of the world that is Big Chill, choosing 15 different tracks to celebrate the festivals 15th year of existence. The selectors include Mr Norman Jay MBE, Gilles Peterson, Tom Middleton, Mr Scruff, Coldcut, Tuung, Jon Hopkins and the Big Chill Forum dwellers to name a few. With such choice cuts including tracks from Orbital, The Cinematic Orchestra, 4 Hero, The Orb, Ulrich Schnauss and Jon Shuttleworth, not to mention an exclusive composition from Tom Middleton himself featuring on the iTunes edition of
the album. 15 By 15 is going to be a souvenir to some, on constant repeat for others and one brilliant compilation for all!
